Contemporary Gardening

Many people love gardening as their hobby, from vegetable patches and flower borders to more ambitious rockeries and water features. As with decorating our houses, we all have our own tastes and style when it comes to gardening and many people are starting to favour the contemporary look for a garden.

Luckily, the market is opening up to new types of decor for our garden and it is now fairly easy to get hold of what we need to make our garden into our own little contemporary havens. Gone are the gnomes and plastic rabbits of the last few years and in their place comes wall art and modern sculpture.

The type of design we favour has also differed greatly when it comes to furniture and we are now more likely to choose a minimalistic wicker design sofa and chairs or a day bed, than a traditional teak chair and table.

The type of furniture that only used to be available from the designers – and at top prices – are now available from DIY stores and mail order at very reasonable prices. The structure of the garden is also changing according to tastes and while many people still prefer the traditional wild cottage style look, others are switching their tastes to more clean cut gardens, such as a Japanese design, which is far easier to maintain.

Decorating a garden is purely down to individual taste but we are strongly influenced by what is deemed fashionable at the time. We also have to consider that other people may visit our garden and so we still have to try and maintain a space that will mean that others will want to visit again and again!
